Why does lowercase l look exactly like an uppercase I?

ok, just open up a word document or answer this question....and type a lowercase L and an uppercase I..... heres the result..... lI .....so if you are trying to type the word "ill" at the beginning of the sentence....you would get..."Ill" doesnt look right does it....could somebody tell me why it is like this?!
